Meet Our King’s Summer Coaching Staff
King’s Football Head Coach and Camp Director
Jim Shapiro is in his 25th year coaching at King’s and his 22nd year as the head coach of the High School Football team. King’s played in the state championship in 2015. The team has earned nine academic state championships. In 2013, Shapiro was named the Washington Coach of the Year by National Federation of High School Associations. In 2014 he was named the Cascade Conference Coach of the Year. In 2015 he was named NFL/Seattle Seahawks Coach of the Week. Jim played college football at Azusa Pacific University and Pacific Lutheran University. He is married, has 4 kids, and owns a nonprofit business development consulting company.
King’s Basketball Head Coach and Camp Director
Rick Skeen holds a career record of 319-103 in 18 years of coaching. Coach Skeen was named state coach of the year in 2008, 2015 and 2016. Skeen has won numerous other coaching awards on the way to leading his teams to 12 consecutive state tournament appearances. His teams have played in 7 state championship games and 9 state semifinal games during that time. In 2015 and 2016, King’s Boys Varsity Basketball under Skeen’s leadership won back to back Class 1A Washington State titles.
Shooting Stars Girls Basketball Head Coach and Camp Director
Dan Taylor has been coaching girls and boys in basketball since 1998. He started his career coaching youth girls and boys select basketball and then began his high school coaching career as a boys’ varsity assistant. He has coached as a varsity girls coach for nine seasons. He has won nine different Coach of the Year awards including 2007 Seattle Star Times Coach of the Year and 1A Coach of the Year in 2014 and in 2015, he led King’s Varsity Girls Basketball to the Class 1A Washington State title. He is currently the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association president and has trained/coached athletes from Kindergarten to College level in individual training sessions and camps.
King’s Girls Soccer Head Coach and Camp Director
Nicole Gabelein has coached King’s High School Soccer the last 12 years. During that time King’s Women’s Soccer has placed in the top four in the state eight times. She has a record of 176 wins and 44 losses. Every year King’s soccer players graduate and go on to play soccer at all levels in college. Prior to coaching at King’s she ran camps and trained players of all ages. Nicole worked to launch Seattle Scores, an after school soccer and literacy program. that became the largest state funded after school program. She grew up playing soccer in the Seattle area and went on to play for Westmont College in California, becoming a three time All-American. She played 3 years for the Women’s Professional team LA Blues. Nicole was inducted into the Westmont College Hall of Fame in 2005. She met her husband at King’s and has 2 children.
King’s Volleyball Head Coach and Camp Director
2019 will mark Coach Foley’s 12th year of coaching volleyball at King’s. King’s teams have gone a combined 221-28 during that time (.873). 2019 will also be Bart’s 2nd year as Head Coach. Foley’s first year at the helm saw the Knights go undefeated in conference play, capturing the first-ever North Sound Conference title and also pickup both District and Bi-District titles ‘en route to a 3rd place overall finish in State. Foley started coaching competitive volleyball with All Out Volleyball Club back in 2005 where he has coached numerous teams at nearly every level since. Foley joined the King’s staff in 2008 and King’s promptly won the school its first state championship, with a repeat in 2009. Foley was the Associate Head Coach for the program from 2015-2018 helping guide the Knights back to the program’s 3rd state title in 2017. Bart is passionate about helping every girl to become the best they can be on and off the floor, as student athletes and as Christians. Coach Foley has been an ambassador for the sport of volleyball in the King’s community through his leadership at All Out as well as King’s Elementary and Jr High camps and clinics through the years. Foley also serves as an executive board member for the Puget Sound Region of USA Volleyball where he is an advocate for club athletes and their families.
King’s Golf Head Coach and Camp Director
Simonette Sancho is in her 9th year coaching at King’s and is entering her 5th season as Head Coach. The team has won the Cascade Conference Championships under her leadership in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, and has had at least one player place in the top 8 at the State Championship each season since becoming head coach. Last season, the King’s girls’ golf team, for the second year in a row, are the 1A state champions. Coach Simonette has been voted Cascade Conference Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015. In addition to coaching at King’s, Simonette is also a Head Coach for The First Tee of Greater Seattle.
