What is a Serve and Learn Trip at King’s High School?
King’s High School students have several opportunities to serve locally and globally with Serve and Learn Trips. Most of the trips occur during spring break, with a few opportunities in the summer. Serve and Learn Trips over spring break range from one week to 10 days in length. King’s High School teachers lead the trip, along with parent volunteers. Typically, King’s partners with an organization abroad where students can serve. Some examples of projects students have helped with are building a house, painting, volunteering at camps and churches, playing games with young students, and cleaning up local trash. Students participate in these projects while sharing the love of Jesus with the people they meet. Serve and Learn Trips allow students to take their classroom curriculum and put it into practice in the real world.
Where can students serve?
Locations for Serve and Learn Trips vary from year to year. In the past, King’s High School has offered students the opportunity to serve locally in Seattle, WA, as well as globally in Jamaica, Nicaragua, Kenya, and Uganda. Throughout the year, students have several fundraising opportunities to help pay for their trip as well as time to bond and train as a team.
How are students impacted?
Christian King’s High School students can be positively impacted in a variety of ways when they go on a Serve and Learn Trip. For starters, they gain firsthand experience of serving others and witnessing to people in diverse cultures or communities. This can provide a sense of purpose and meaning that may not be found in other aspects of their lives. Additionally, students may develop new skills or improve existing ones, such as public speaking or leadership, as they communicate with others and organize events or activities. This impact lasts a lifetime.
One King’s Alumni shared, “Having the opportunity to go to a different culture showed me that no matter what you have, there is always room to be happy. I learned that the presence of God is everywhere. I went on my trip to Jamaica almost five years ago, and what I learned still impacts me today in college.”
The impact of King’s Serve and Learn Trips is incredible, both in the lives of those being served and the students. This ripple effect of positivity changes our world for the better.
